Morelle served in the New York State Assembly, representing District 136 from 1991 to 2018. He served as majority leader.

On January 27, 2015, Morelle was nominated to replace Sheldon Silver (D) as speaker of the New York State Assembly. Silver resigned as speaker on February 2, 2015. Morelle served in the post until Carl Heastie (D) was elected to the position on February 3, 2015.

Morelle earned his B.A. in political science from the State University of New York at Geneseo. His professional experience includes being the president and chief executive officer of MMI Technologies, Incorporated and serving as an administrator at the Anthony L. Jordan Health Center. Morelle's political experience outside of the New York State Legislature includes being a New York Appointee for the Council of Young Political Leaders, a county legislator for Monroe County, and a leader of the Irondequoit Democratic Committee.
