Gaetz is a former Republican member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing District 4 from April 13, 2010, to 2016. He won a special election in April 2010 that was called after former speaker Ray Sansom resigned in February 2010.

Prior to his time in politics, Gaetz worked as an attorney.

During his tenure in Congress, Gaetz has served as a member of the Budget Committee, the Armed Services Committee, and the Judiciary Committee.

Gaetz earned his B.S. in social science with concentrations in political science, history, and geography from Florida State University in 2003 and his J.D. from the College of William and Mary in 2007. His professional experience includes working as an attorney with the firm of Keefe, Anchors, Gordon and Moyle in Fort Walton Beach.
