Imagine this: Lives hanging in the balance, and the very vehicles designed to save them are being used for… a joyride? That's the shocking reality uncovered in a recent report from The Guardian. Police in Tanzania have arrested five ambulance drivers, accused of a blatant misuse of emergency services. Instead of rushing patients to hospitals, these drivers were allegedly turning ambulances into makeshift taxis, ferrying passengers between Dar es Salaam and Mutukula in the Kagera Region.
According to SACP Alex Mkama, the regional police commander, the arrests were made during a road safety operation. The goal? To protect road users and reduce accidents, especially during the busy festive season. The drivers were caught red-handed, violating traffic laws and public health rules by carrying ordinary passengers in vehicles specifically designated for medical emergencies.
But here's where it gets controversial: Ambulances are meant for one thing: transporting patients in need of urgent medical care. They are not supposed to be used as commercial passenger vehicles. The arrested drivers, including George Mung’ongo (29), Paul Zacharia (37), Victor Baroho (30), Godliving Sawe (37), and John Masae (26), were found with a concerning number of passengers in their vehicles. One ambulance, driven by George Mung’ongo, was carrying eight passengers. Others were carrying nine or twelve!
This misuse of ambulances sparked outrage. Shamim Abdalah, a resident of Morogoro, expressed her disappointment, rightly pointing out the unethical and dangerous nature of the situation. "The misuse of ambulances can prevent patients from receiving timely medical care. A mother in need of an emergency referral could lose her life simply because an ambulance is being used as a minibus," she stated.
The authorities are taking this seriously. The government and police were commended for their swift action, and the RPC affirmed that the safety operation will continue. Officers will be stationed on major highways to ensure compliance with traffic and public safety regulations, and any misuse of emergency service vehicles will face severe consequences. The public is also urged to report any suspicious use of ambulances, as community cooperation is vital to ensuring these life-saving vehicles are available when they are truly needed.
