Get ready for a winter wonderland of hockey like youāve never seen beforeābecause Mattawa is turning January into a full-blown hockey extravaganza, and youāre invited! Inspired by the iconic Hockey Night in Canada, the town is launching Hockey Month in Mattawa, a jam-packed celebration thatās sure to score big with fans of all ages. But hereās where it gets even more exciting: the lineup includes appearances by NHL legends, local heroes, and even a chance to lace up your skates alongside the pros. And this is the part most people missāitās not just about the games; itās about community, inspiration, and a love for the sport that transcends generations.
The mastermind behind this icy takeover? Sheri Wabie, Mattawaās Parks and Recreation Supervisor, who dreamed up the idea this fall and has been working tirelessly to make it a reality. āMy goal was to pack January with as many hockey-focused events as humanly possible,ā Wabie explained. And boy, has she delivered. From public skates with OHL stars to a thrilling alumni game featuring former NHL greats, thereās something for every hockey enthusiast.
Kicking things off on January 10, members of the North Bay Battalion OHL team will hit the ice for a free public skate. Fans are encouraged to join the players for a spin around the rink, snap photos, and snag autographs. The event runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Mike Rodden Arenaāmark your calendars!
But the real showstopper? On January 17, The Legends Tour NHL Alumni rolls into town, bringing hockey royalty like Ron and Rich Sutter, Brian Sutherby, John LeBlanc, and Bernie Nicholls. These veterans will face off against a team of local Mattawa stars, including Brody Belanger and Eric Boule, in a game you wonāt want to miss. Hereās the controversial part: while tickets are $40 for general admission, VIP Meet and Greet passes are still available for $100ābut is the extra cost worth it for a chance to rub shoulders with NHL legends? You decide.
During intermission, The Northern Edge Adult 3 Synchro Team will dazzle the crowd with their precision and grace. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the puck dropping at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Mattawa Information Centre, the Mike Rodden Arena, or by calling Wabie at 705-744-5611, ext. 141.
January 21 brings a moment of inspiration as former NHL player Ted Nolan takes center stage at F.J. McElligott Secondary School. A trailblazer for Indigenous players in the NHL, Nolan will share stories from his remarkable career, including his time coaching the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders. The event is free, but tickets are requiredāgrab yours at the Mattawa Information Centre. And this is where it gets thought-provoking: How has Nolanās legacy shaped the sport for Indigenous athletes today? Letās discuss in the comments.
