Get ready for a thrilling swim story that will leave you on the edge of your seat! Rylee Erisman, a junior swimming sensation, has just shattered records and made history!
At the 2025 FHSAA Swimming & Diving Championships in Ocala, Florida, Erisman, representing Windermere High School, achieved an incredible feat. She broke Gretchen Walsh's five-year-old National High School record in the 100-meter freestyle, clocking an impressive 46.73. But here's where it gets controversial...
While Erisman's swim is officially recognized as the fastest in high school competition, the record-keeping system has a unique twist. Traditionally, public and independent (private) schools have separate record categories. So, Gretchen Walsh, who went on to dominate at the University of Virginia, retains the independent school record with her time of 46.98. Meanwhile, Erisman claims the public school record, having also surpassed Abbey Weitzeil's mark of 47.09 from 2015.
Let's dive into the splits comparison to truly appreciate Erisman's achievement:
| Swimmer | 50m Split | 100m Split | Total Time |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rylee Erisman | 22.75 | 23.98 | 46.73 |
| Gretchen Walsh | 22.66 | 24.32 | 46.98 |
Erisman's performance is even more remarkable when you consider that she just missed breaking the public schools record last year with a time of 47.14. And get this, she was only slightly off her personal best of 46.69, which she achieved at the Junior Nationals representing her club team, the Windermere Lakers. That time stands as the 15-16 National Age Group record, and she's been on a roll ever since, setting NAG records and collecting medals at the Junior World Championships.
On the day of the championships, Erisman dominated, winning all four events she entered. She anchored the 200 medley relay with a blazing 21.51 split, helping Windermere secure the win. In the 50 free, she clocked a 21.67, just shy of her national public school record time from the previous year. And her individual 100 free performance was nothing short of exceptional, breaking the record and setting a new personal best.
Despite Erisman's outstanding efforts, the deep and talented Riverview Sarasota team emerged victorious, winning the meet 395-305 over Windermere High.
As for Erisman's future, she hasn't announced her college commitment yet, but she's certainly got options. She's taken official visits to top swimming programs at Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, Cal, and Virginia.
Stay tuned for more recaps and insights from the FHSAA State Championships.
And this is the part most people miss... Erisman's story is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of high school swimmers. It's a reminder that records are made to be broken, and with each new achievement, the sport of swimming becomes even more exciting.
What do you think? Is Erisman's performance a sign of things to come? Will she continue to dominate and leave a lasting impact on the sport? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
