This month marks a significant milestone as The Seas pavilion at EPCOT celebrates its 40th anniversary! Currently known as The Seas with Nemo & Friends, this beloved attraction first opened its doors as The Living Seas in 1986, and it has been enchanting visitors ever since.
Celebrating 40 Years of Oceanic Wonder
Dr. Mark Penning, the Vice President of Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment, recently shared a teaser about the upcoming 40th anniversary festivities on Instagram, stating, "Since 1986, this EPCOT pavilion has inspired guests and deepened appreciation for the importance of our oceans. Follow along all month as we continue to celebrate this milestone!"
The journey to create The Living Seas began years before EPCOT's grand opening in 1982, with plans initially laid out for it to debut in 1984. However, due to various delays, the pavilion ultimately welcomed its first guests on January 15, 1986, and was proudly sponsored by United Technologies until 1998.
Upon its debut, The Living Seas featured an engaging film titled "The Sea," which introduced guests to the wonders of the ocean. Visitors then enjoyed a unique experience aboard an "elevator" that descended to the ocean floor called the Hydrolator, leading them to the Caribbean Coral Reef Ride. The adventure concluded in the impressive SeaBase Alpha aquarium, where guests could marvel at an array of marine life.
In 2003, following the success of Disney's animated film Finding Nemo, The Living Seas underwent a transformation. This re-theme included the much-loved interactive experience Turtle Talk with Crush, which opened in November 2004 to rave reviews. The pavilion closed for renovations in August 2005 and began reopening in November of the same year, featuring an expanded Turtle Talk area and fresh Finding Nemo-themed decorations throughout.
Interestingly, the Caribbean Coral Reef Ride, which had been part of The Living Seas, closed in late 2001 due to declining attendance. It was eventually revitalized and reimagined as The Seas with Nemo & Friends, officially opening in early 2007.
In recent years, Disney has made several exciting updates to The Seas. For instance, new signage has been added for both the SeaBase aquarium and the Coral Reef Restaurant. Additionally, the pavilion's exterior received a vibrant new color scheme and lighting enhancements in late 2023, making it even more inviting to guests.
Last year marked another significant change for the aquarium, which transitioned from being a long-term care facility to a short-term rehabilitation center for marine life, including Florida manatees. Furthermore, after a five-year absence, the diver lock-out chamber demonstration returned, offering guests a glimpse into the fascinating underwater world.
